How Much Is A Nixon Watch Worth?

by Murat Balci on June 08, 2023

Nixon debuted with a modest 7-watch lineup, with prices ranging from $65 to $120. Over 90 models are now available through the firm. Their entry-level, budget model still starts at $60, but their high-end timepieces can now be purchased for over $1,500.

Some of our readers may be confused by the wide range of prices and wonder why some Nixon watches are so expensive if the company is just another fashion watch brand.

As the name implies, fashion watches are created primarily with aesthetics in mind. Fossil, Diesel, MVMT, and designer labels like Armani and Gucci are just a few of the many companies that specialize in fashion-forward timepieces.

Since watch manufacturers like Nixon and Fossil produce so many different models, it can be tough to compare them directly. The most we can do is take a look at Nixon's selection and evaluate the various functions of each timepiece.

How To Open Nixon Watch?

Nixon watches, like any other brand, are mechanical and comprised of moving parts. They require periodic upkeep and battery replacement. Some Nixon watches are easy enough to service on your own, while others will need to be taken to a jeweler. Nixon watches have a warranty that is immediately nullified if the back is opened or removed.

Find or invest in a tool commonly used by jewelers. Nixon watches are watertight, so you'll need one to take off the back.

Find the notches on the watch's case back. Modify the tool's teeth so they can engage with the recesses.

Keep your grip firm on the Nixon watch as you align the indentations with the jeweler's tool. Turn around and take the back off. Nixon recommends taking watches in for service or to a jeweler if the back cannot be removed without using excessive force.

How To Adjust Nixon Watch Band?

A spring bar is a bar with two small rings near the ends that connects the watch strap to the watch lugs. A spring bar tool is required for removal of the band. Most have two distinct ends, one pointed and one with a tiny v-shaped prong. The spring bar can be grasped using the v-shaped prong end. Instructions for removing a watch band with spring bars are as follows:

  • Spread out a plush cloth or mousepad to use as a desk. This safeguards your timepiece from abrasions as you repair it.
  • Put the glass of your watch on the soft surface.
  • Remove the lug and insert the v-shaped prong of the spring bar tool into the tiny hole on the outside of the bar.
  • To remove the pin, press the bar down with the tool.
  • Take off the bandage cautiously.
  • To finish the other side of the watch, simply reverse the procedure.

You have just finished unfastening your spring bar strap and are now prepared to fasten on a new band.

How To Make A Nixon Watch Smaller?

There are a number of tools you'll need if you want to replace the pins (called "cotter pins") in your metal watch band.

Everything you need to shrink a metal band of this type is right here:

  • Need a push pin tool. Something with a fine but not sharp tip and a diameter of 8mm.
  • Band holder/sizing block (imagine a vice grip with just the right amount of padding).
  • Pliers with very pointed noses (also known as "needle nose pliers").
  • Miniature hammer for hobbyists, also used for fine tapping.
  • Microfiber or a soft sunglasses case are two examples of abrasion-free fabrics.

As soon as you have everything you need, you can begin.

Be aware that the micro adjuster on the clasp should be used before removing links from more conventional stainless steel bands. In addition, a specialized instrument is required for the Nixon 51-30's strap adjustment.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Removing Links with a Push Pin Tool and Band Holder:

  1. Pinch band on your wrist: Put your watch on your wrist and pinch the links to the tightness you want your watch.
  2. Identify links to remove: As you pinch the watch band, count how many links are in the pinched section. That is the amount of links you’ll want to remove from the band to resize it.

  3. Look for arrows on the links: Many times, metal watch bands will have arrows on the backside of the links. These arrows mark the direction that the pins need to be removed. You’ll be pushing the pin out in the same direction the arrows point.NOTE: If you're having difficulty locating which end of the pin to remove, find the side of the pin that has the split down the middle.
  4. Position watch band in band holder: In order to do this like a pro, you will put the watch band into a watch band holder with the arrows on the back of the links pointing down. The link you want to remove should have its pin lined up with the hole in the band holder.
  5. Remove pins: Hold your pin pusher tool against the pin of the link that needs removed. Using the flat side of your hammer, gently begin tapping down on your pin pusher to begin removing the pin. Once you can’t push the pin any further, remove the band from the band holder. The cotter pin might just fall out. If it doesn’t, use your pliers to gently pull it out. Set the pin aside and repeat this process for each link that needs removed.
  6. Reassemble the watch band: Once you’ve removed the links that need taken out, it’s time to put the metal watch strap back together. Put the two ends together and push the pin into the hole. Using the hammer, gently hit the pin into the link until it is fully pushed in.NOTE: A pointed punch tool may be helpful for driving the link pins back into position (place the point on top of split end and gently drive pin into band).
  7. Check the fit: Finally, put your watch back on your wrist and check the fit. If links need to be replaced or more removed, repeat the above process.

If your watch uses cotter pins instead of links, you can use a "watch link removal tool" to shorten or lengthen the band.
